Explore blogs, articles, FAQs, and links to reputable sources designed to make the property tax process clear and manageable. Everyone pays taxes, and the TexPTAN promise is to help keep property taxes fair and equitable for everyone... but you can't play the game unless you know the rules.
Property taxes have 2 basic parts, the market value of your property and the tax rate. The tax rate is determined by the local officials you elect and the projects you help fund by voting for construction or bonds to complete a public project. If you vote for funding a new high school football stadium, that's fine... just realize you will pay for it with increased property taxes. We cannot help with the people you elect, but we encourage everyone to vote responsibly.
TexPTAN is here to help with the other part of the equation, the market value assessment of your property by the tax office. Property taxes should be fair, which means that the market value of your property should be determined, and equitable, which means your tax amount should reasonably equal other similar properties in your area. The appraisal district assesses hundreds (or thousands) of properties each year... is your assessment fair and equitable?
